Brian Smith, the Director of Rugby of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Football Union club the London Irish believes that the club’s young starlet Tom Homer will be given his chance with the England national team.
The 23 year old full back for The Exiles has long been seen by many as a future England star, especially after his back to back record breaking feats in the junior World Cup.
However, a niggling injury of the knee prevented him from building on an extremely impressive 2011-12 campaign for The Exiles when he was voted as the club’s Player of the Season and was also awarded the Aviva Premiership Golden Boot. And Homer did mention that he wasn’t expecting to be named in the squad that head coach Stuart Lancaster named last week that will go on tour of South America during the summer.
But according to his boss at the London Irish, all Homer needs to do is wait for the opportunity because it is only a matter of time before he is given his first call-up to the senior England side. According to Smith, the beauty of having a player like Tom Homer in the side is that the coach is then free to pick the best ball player. He mentioned that very often, the number 10 selection can be a real pain and often it is a defensive selection, but from an attacking point of view, that is not the way to go.
The London Irish mentioned that Tom is a real gem, adding that he puts in his 100% ever year. He mentioned that he believes that the youngster will be given a call-up to the national team one day, but he is just not sure when that time will come for
